Outstanding 4-H member from Hilton receives scholarship award

Nicole Gavigan of Hilton is the 2004-2005 recipient of the Norman V. Ryan Memorial Scholarship Award. The Ryan Scholarship is a tribute to the life of 4-H alumnus and supporter Norman V. Ryan of Troy. The winner is selected by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County and is awarded to an outstanding 4-H senior who, in the eyes of the selection committee, demonstrates leadership and service, and plans to pursue a college degree as a result of their 4-H experience. The Ryan Scholarship presentation took place on July 17, at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.

Gavigan, a graduate of Hilton High School, was a member of the National Honor Society, finished in the top 25 percent of her class, and was an active volunteer at the Open Door Mission throughout high school. She was a member of the Hunter's Horseman 4-H Horse Club for nine years. This experience gave her the know how to train horses, teach riding lessons and work part-time for a local retailer with an equine specialty. Her greatest accomplishment in 4-H was her consecutive 8th placing at the New York State 4-H Public Presentations, a public speaking event.

Gavigan has been accepted to Cazenovia College and plans to study Equine Business and ride with the Varsity Equine Team in the fall.

Note: Westside News Inc. publisher Keith Ryan is the son of the late Norman V. Ryan for whom the scholarship is named.
