Brockport student art featured on Main Street

Village officials and merchants joined students and instructors of the New York State Summer School of the Arts at a reception held at Soulshine to celebrate the display of street banners created by the summer arts students.

High school art students attending the summer program for gifted students created eight banners featuring 16 different images.

In addition, local business owner Shari Hogan hosted the first off-campus exhibition of NYSSSA work, displayed at her business, Soulshine, at 31 Main Street in Brockport through July 27.

Held each year during the month of July, the NYSSSA has called Brockport home for six consecutive years. To be accepted at the school, art students must submit their portfolios for review in a competitive admissions process. All faculty and teaching assistants are professional artists. Students work in 2D mixed media, 3D mixed media, metal, sculpture and printmaking, in what amounts to a full college semester crammed into one month. The course includes lectures by professional artists at least three times a week.

One hundred twenty-six students participate in this residential program, living on-campus within strict guidelines and with adult supervision. A final exhibition of the work was scheduled for Friday, July 29.
