Churchville Lions Club Country Fair offers two days of family friendly fun

The annual Churchville Lions Club Country Fair, August 20 and 21, offers two days of fun, entertainment and fundraising events for the whole family.

Saturday's highlights include a parade at 11:30 a.m. and all day classic car cruise-in event; a pedal tractor pull at 1 p.m.; the annual pie contest, awards and auction and a 6 p.m. tractor parade.

Publicity Chairperson Regina Arlauckus said the fair is going to be a great family event.

"We have taken the theme of country fair and melded it with the antique tractors and farm equipment and have expanded it by tossing in the pie baking contest, and many other events," she said. "We have some great musical acts including the Lama Jama Band, Kelly's Old Timer Band and Heartland and Johnny Bauer bands."

"Proceeds from the Churchville Lions Country Fair are used by the Churchville Lions Club to serve the Churchville/Riga community," Arlauckus said. "The Churchville Lions Club provides scholarships, supports local Boy Scout, Girl Scout and 4H groups, provides a food pantry and maintains a medical loan closet for those in need of medical equipment."

Entertainment will run from 1 to 9 p.m. and the evening will be capped off with fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

On Sunday, fairgoers can take part in a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. The fair officially opens at 10 a.m. with the 5K fun run. The antique tractor pulls runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with entertainment being offered from noon to 5 p.m. The two-day event ends with the grand prize drawing between 5 and 6 p.m.

Also taking place on Sunday after the 5K race is a charity hair-cutting event at which time Lions members will be undergoing the shears of Lion Jim Lamica as a way to raise money for fellow Lion Jim Rieflin.

On both days, a petting zoo, silent auction, arts and crafts booths, food, children's games, chainsaw carving, threshing and bailing demos are offered.

There is free parking and free admission. The event will be held at West Buffalo Street, Park Road and Park Road Extension in Churchville. For information go to www.churchvillelions.org.

Let the bidding begin
Guest Auctioneer Carol Ritter Wright will be working the auction block at the Churchville Lions Country Fair. This is the second year for the live auction and this year's proceeds, Lion Regina Arlauckas said, will likely go into the Lion's general fundraising account for projects that come up during the year.

The auction is Saturday, August 20 at 3:30 p.m. in the main entertainment tent. Bidders can try their luck at items such as: the three top pies in each division of the Star of The West Pie Baking Contest; chainsaw carvings by Matthew Haas of Honeoye Falls; and many other items that have been donated by local businesses.

A traditional silent auction will also take place during the weekend event.

Running, or walking, for a good cause
The Churchville Lions Club will sponsor a 5K Fun Run/Walk/Roll on Sunday, August 21, as part of the Country Fair. The proceeds of the 5K will benefit Lion Jim Rieflin, a longtime resident of Churchville and member of the Churchville Lions Club. Rieflin is undergoing treatment for cancer at the Pluta Cancer Center.

Individuals interested in participating in the 5K are asked to pledge $10 for adults; $5 children under 16; and $25 for a family of four or more. Anyone raising pledges of more than $50 will receive a free chicken barbecue the day of the race.

'Barbering' benefits Lion member
Following the 5K race on Sunday, August 21, a few members of the Churchville Lions Club have volunteered to let Lion Jim Lamica polish up on his barbering skills. These Lions will let Lamica barber their hair, beards or mustaches in order to raise money for fellow Lion Jim Rieflin who is undergoing cancer treatments.

Among the Lions who are getting sheared are: Bill Keidel who has offered to lose his trademark mustache that he has worn for 30 years for $500 worth of donations and for an additional $100 in donations he will also get his hair cut; Peter Neidrauer, former highway superintendent, will get a hair cut for $100; Town of Riga Supervisor Tim Rowe will undergo a hair cut and beard shave for $250; and John Rabideau, aka The Silver Fox, will get a hair cut for $350.

"We hope that anyone wishing to donate so that these Lions can get a free hair cut will do so knowing that it will help a fellow Churchville resident," Lamica said.

Those wishing to make a donation can make checks payable to the Churchville Lions Club and send them to Jim Lamica, 802 Bromley Road, Churchville, NY 14428.
