Pastor Charles Alspaugh


Former Trinity Lutheran Church pastor dies

Pastor Charles Alspaugh served Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencerport for seven years.

Rev. Charles (Charlie) Alspaugh and his wife, Donna came to Spencerport and Trinity Lutheran Church in 1997. Previously, he served 24 years in the Pacific Northwest with congregations in Idaho, Alaska, Oregon and Washington. Prior to that, congregations were served in Colorado and California.

As part of his pastoral ministry, Pastor Alspaugh was a leader in continuing education workshops in such areas as worship outreach, youth and family ministry, evangelism, issues of family grief, substance abuse, aids, end of life ethics, alcoholism and others. He served in numerous circuit, district, inter-Lutheran and community service positions.

Pastor Alspaugh was born in Hickory, North Carolina and grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After attending St. John College, Winfield, Kansas, he received a degree in history from the University of Texas at El Paso. He graduated in 1968 from Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois. The vicarage internship was served on Staten Island in New York City.

Pastor Alspaugh was married to Donna Robenstein on May 29, 1966 in Eureka, Illinois. They raised two children, Robert and Deanna. Their son, Robert and his wife, Julianna, have two children, Kahli and Mya. Deanna Spencer and her husband, Tim, have four children, Nathan, Kendra, Davis and Abby.

Pastor Alspaugh retired from the ministry in June 2004 due to poor health. He died July 27, 2005. Funeral services were held August 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spencerport.


AREA

Ayles, Ellsworth L. "Ebs," of Alexandria Bay, August 12, 2005, age 82. A WWII Navy veteran, and retiree of Eastman Kodak Company. Predeceased by wife, Betty (Eaton) in 1975; and brother, Gerald Ayles. Survived by longtime companion, Bette Hewitt of Alexandria Bay; sons, Darrel (Carol) of Derby Line, Vermont and Randy (Kim) of Spencerport; daughter, Mrs. Terry (Gay) Millett of Alexandria Bay; several grand and great grandchildren; and sister, Miriam Senecal of Alexandria Bay. A former member of Hilton Volunteer Fire Department and member of American Legion and Civil Defense, Greece.

Funeral Services were held August 16 at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. Interment, Pleasant Valley, Hammond. Contributions can be made to River Hospital Foundation or the hospice of one's choice in his memory.


Ketcham, Elizabeth M. "Betty" (Rockow), August 12, 2005, in Middletown, New York, age 85. She is survived by her husband, Horace A. Ketcham Jr.; two daughters, Cherie K. Rockow and her husband Duane of Hamlin, Candy (Elizabeth) Burnett and husband Ben of Middletown; two sons, Horace A. "Lucky" Ketcham III and wife Barbara of San Diego, California, Frank S. Ketcham and his wife Karen of Otisville; eleven grandchildren, Michelle (Scott) Ellis, Scott, Brian, Jason, Kyle and Sarah Ketcham, Kirstin (Jeff) Penders, Keith (Zoraya) and Brent Rockow, Troy and Keri Burnett; three great grandchildren, Tory and Cole Penders, Miles Rockow; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by four brothers, Alfred Mitchell, Walter, Elwood and Benjamin Myers.

Sage, Loretta A. "Sam," August 16, 2005. Age 50. Mother of Kenneth Sage of Scottsdale, Arizona; sister of Robert (Carol) Stone, of Florida, Gloria Stein and Patty Baker, both of Bergen.

Services were held August 21 at the family residence in Bergen. Memorials can be made to the family.


BROCKPORT

Fowler, Terrence P., Of Penfield, on Friday, August 12, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine; his daughter, Paula (Stephen) Arvan; his grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer; his sister, Denise (Donald) Bartalo; his brothers, Vincent (Bonnie) Cortlandt and Todd (Susan); several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held August 16 at the Fowler Funeral Home, Inc., Brockport. Interment Lake View Cemetery. Donations can be made to American Heart Association or the American Cancer Association in his memory.


•Martin, Robert J., On August 11, 2005 at age 83. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years. Kathleen (Mann) Martin; his daughters, Judy (Rene) Hensel, Janet (Ron) Boehly, Joan Martin, Carol (Robert) Barrus; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; also survived by his brother, Richard (Oddy) Martin of Brockport; sisters-in-law, Teresa and Ann as well as nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, John and Esther; brothers, Bernard and Leonard. A life long resident of Brockport, Robert was a principal and contributing partner of Martin Farms.

A Funeral Mass was said August 15 at the Church of the Nativity, Brockport. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Donations can be made to Lakeside Foundation or Church of the Nativity in his memory.


CHURCHVILLE

Polaski, Donald E. Jr., Suddenly, August 14, 2005 at age 45. He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Cheryl; his children, Donald and Denise; his parents Donald (Shirley) E. Polaski Sr.; his brothers and sister Dennis (Delores) Polaski, Deborah Jo (David) Poirier and Daryl Polaski; father and mother-in-law, Richard and Carol Haines; sisters-in-law Luanne (Steve) Vallese and Theresa Haines; his four nieces and four nephews.

Sanguedolce, Mary M. (Sellitto), August 14, 2005. Predeceased by her son Joseph Sanguedolce; and her parents Louis and Jennie Sellitto. Survived by her daughter Joanne Rinaldi; granddaughter Joelle Rinaldi; brother and sisters, Anthony Butch (Dianne) Sellitto, Ann (Patrick) Distefano, Angela Sellitto; sister and special caregiver Geraldine Sellitto; several nieces, nephews, cherished cousins and friends.

Stock, Helen J., August 16, 2005, age 89. She was predeceased by her husband, Perry, 1998 and her son, Jerry. She is survived by her children, Virginia (Duane) Milroy, James Stock (Donna Yanklowski) and Robert (Mary) Stock; her sister-in-law, June Stock; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

SPENCERPORT

Celento, George J., August 12, 2005. Predeceased by his brother, Felix P. Celento. Survived by his wife Roberta (Sansone) Celento; sons, Philip (Jessica) Celento, Joseph Celento; grandson, Giuseppe Celento; parents Pasquale and Frances Celento; sister, Vicki (David) Gouveia; uncles, Larry Bianchi, Carl (Aletha) Patricelli; sisters-in-law, Rosemary (Frank) Lentine and Sandra (Richard) Zambito; special friends, Frank (Phyllis) Mirabella; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. After retiring from RIT George worked part time at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

•Viney, Robert D., on August 15, 2005, age 57. Predeceased by his father, Donald C. Viney. Survived by his loving wife, Linda, and sons Christopher (Kellie and son Ryan) and Jeffrey (Sara and sons Michael and Alexander). He was a loving son to Nan Viney, Lackawanna; brother to Charles (Bernie) of Derby; Mary Ann Barbarita (Thomas), Dawn Quinn (Michael). He was the loving son-in-law of Buryle and Winnie Marvin, LeRoy; brother-in-law to Paul Marvin (Joan) of Hilton and faithful uncle to many nieces and nephews. Bob was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Viet Nam. He was employed at Xerox (Webster) for 30 years.
