SUMC group lends helping hand in Pittsburgh

Fifteen youth and adults from the Spencerport United Methodist Church (SUMC) worked for a week in inner city Pittsburgh transforming homes for needy families by rebuilding, repairing.

Along with approximately 200 other volunteers, the SUMC mission team participated in 20-year-old Pittsburgh Project, a nondenominational program committed to improving life in the city. Teens were paired with another youth from their own church, two other youth pairs, and one or two adults. The work crews went to residential homes and worked from Monday through Friday.

The staff of The Pittsburgh Project provided meals, dormitory-style housing, tools, and building expertise, along with morning and evening worship programs with meditation, music, drama and teen leaders telling their life stories.

SUMC's Mission Team worked for two years to raise the money to participate in the project. To learn more about this trip or have the SUMC Mission Team speak with your group about their experiences, contact Pastor Ellen Loughrin (349-1550) or Bev Compertore (594-4458).
