Kirkin' o' the Tartan presented
at Brockport Presbyterian Church

The Brockport Presbyterian Church, in conjunction with the Scottish Heritage Society of Rochester, will host a Kirkin' o' the Tartan ceremony at 10 a.m., Sunday, September 18.

The Kirkin' o' the Tartan comes, in part, from the Kirkin' o' the Council. Here civic leaders in Scotland were publicly exhorted at local parish churches to perform their duties following Christian principles.

The Kirkin' o' the Tartan service, now celebrated in many countries, was originated by Dr. Peter Marshall, Minister of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., for British military personnel stationed there during World War II.

The Scottish Heritage Society conducts this ceremony every year, usually in a Presbyterian Church. It includes Bible readings and the calling of the clans, with clan banner bearers from the society.

A quartet of pipers from the Rochester Scottish Pipes and Drums will play. Mary Peck Lester, professional harpist and vocalist, will perform Scottish and spiritual music.

The ceremony, which is open to everyone, will be a part of the regular Sunday church service.
