Pratt, Johnson lead Blue Devils in football

Running back Dan Johnson ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns and led the team with 13 tackles as Brockport improved to 2-0 with a 27-14 victory over Gates Chili in varsity football.

Blue Devils quarterback Sean Pratt was 7-15 and threw for two touchdowns and led the team with 69 yards rushing.

Brockport took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on their first offensive drive and had another long touchdown run by Pratt called back for holding, but the Spartans scored a touchdown on an 88-yard pass completion to take a 7-6 lead.

In the second quarter, Pratt scampered on a 68-yard touchdown run that was called back for holding resulting in a 41-yard gain. Pratt then found Johnson for a 16 yard screen pass before Johnson scored from 11 yards out. The two-point conversion failed for a 12-7 lead.

Late in the first half, Pratt scored on a nine-yard run to cap a drive highlighted by completions of 43 and 21 yards to Jeff Bush to run the lead to 20-7.

Pratt found Randall Yu for a 60-yard scoring strike and the Brockport defense held the Spartans to just 12 offensive plays in the stanza to run the lead to 27-7 after three quarters. Gates Chili scored with just five seconds remaining in the game for the 27-14 final.

"I focused on keeping my head up after the two touchdown runs were called back," said Pratt. "That was one of my weak points last season. On the long touchdown pass, the defensive player came in high on me, so I ducked under him. Randall and I have great chemistry, so we were able to finish the play."

Eric Ciresi carried 12 times for 54 yards for the Blue Devils. Yu finished with 95 yards receiving and Bush 64. Eric Ottenschot added 11 tackles on defense.
