More than 200 craft vendors will display their handmade arts and crafts during the Hilton Apple Fest’s two day event. “We pride ourselves on choosing vendors that offer only hand made items,” Arts and Crafts Chairperson Sylvia Greninger said. “Our crafters offer a lot of unique items that can’t be found elsewhere.” more

Candles are a source of home fires
As pretty as they are, candles are a growing source of home fires. The National Fire Protection Association reported in 2002 that fires caused by misuse of candles resulted in 157 deaths and $176.1 million in property damage in 1998, the last year for which statistics were available. more

Hamlin woman wins award for county
environmental photography competition

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced the winners of the Monroe County Environmental Management Council's 2005 Environmental Photography Competition. This year's competition was themed, "Capturing Monroe County's Environmental Treasures." more

Local family raises a guide dog
Lynn Farnung watched with pride as the clumsy black ball of fur that once ran through her house was now confidently guiding his new partner down the aisle to her seat. Farnung and her family helped raise and train "Atlas" as volunteer puppy raisers for Guiding Eyes for the Blind and attended his graduation from the organization's Guide Dog Training Program. more

Quilt show auction raises $3,000
North Chili Quilt Show, sponsored by United Methodist Church of North Chili, was a success in spite of inclement weather. The auction, to benefit Flower City Habitat for Humanity's Westside Coalition of Churches projects, raised $3,000. more

Sharing Spaces: Two exhibits in one at SUNY Brockport
The SUNY College at Brockport Department of Art and the Tower Fine Arts Gallery present dual exhibitions: Walking On Water Print Exchange and Elmira College Art Faculty Invitational. The exhibitions open on Tuesday, October 4, with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. and close on Sunday, October 30. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. more

Springdale Farm schedules autumn events
Springdale Farm, located at 696 Colby Street in Spencerport, will celebrate Harvest Days on October 1, 8, 15 and 22. There will be activities for the children including: hay castle, pedal tractors, corn husk teepee, petting zoo, children's garden and carriage rides. more

Stone Soup auction scheduled
Brockport's second annual Stone Soup Auction will be Friday, October 14 at the Brockport High School auditorium. The auction of works by area artists starts at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a viewing of the auction items in the school's atrium beginning at 6:30 p.m. more

Swing for the Hill Tournament benefits recreation
Brockport Country Club owners Tim and Anna Burklew have presented the Sweden Community Foundation with a $10,779 check representing the proceeds of the 2004 and 2005 Swing for the Hill Golf tournaments. The funds will be used to expand and improve recreational opportunities in the greater Sweden community. more

Railroad tracks on Rt. 19 in Bergen to be rebuilt
The CSX Railroad will be rebuilding the grade crossing on Route 19 in the village of Bergen, Genesee County. It will be necessary to close the road and detour traffic on Monday, September 26 at 7 a.m. through Friday, September 29 at 5 p.m. more
