Math program parent information night held

Parents at Byron-Bergen Elementary School had the opportunity to participate in and learn about the newly adopted Math Investigation Program recently. Parents were invited to learn about the inquiry-based balanced math program that follows New York State Learning Standards as well as the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) recommendations.

Parents participated in a cooperative learning activity. They used manipulatives, paper and pencil and talking with their peers to solve a problem. This is the same type of approach that is used in classrooms as students construct meaning while learning the basic concepts of mathematics.

Barbara Wedow, Shari Dressler and Aurelia Peters, teacher trainers with the National Science Foundation/University of Rochester grant program presented the program. They helped parents understand the process of constructing meaning through hands on math and assured them that students will always learn math facts and basic math.
