Dean B. Arlidge

Village of Churchville
mourns Dean Arlidge

The village of Churchville mourns the passing of long time community volunteer, Dean B. Arlidge. He served the Churchville community in many different ways - on the village board, in the chamber of commerce, on the Churchville-Chili School Board, as a member of the American Legion and as an active member of his church.

Dean Arlidge served on the Churchville Board of Trustees from March 1987 until his death and he also served as the village's deputy mayor from April 1997 until his passing.

Churchville Mayor Don Ehrmentraut described Mr. Arlidge as "the stabilizing force for the village board. He saw things scientifically and analytically. He would present an issue in an illustrative manner with charts and graphs so we could see the pros and cons of an issue. He always spoke in a calm, objective manner and was never condescending," Ehrmentraut said.

Marge Murphy, principal of Churchville Elementary School and the former president of the Churchville Chamber of Commerce, remembers Mr. Arlidge for his service to the chamber. "He was one of the driving forces of the chamber. He wanted to keep the chamber local. He was a historian; he would tell me all about the people and the businesses of Churchville. He was so kind to me and so supportive," said Murphy.

Mr. Arlidge served on the Churchville-Chili Central School Board of Education for 19 years, from 1965 to 1984. In 2002, Mr. Arlidge was invited to Churchville-Chili Central Schools for the dedication ceremony of the new math and science wing. As part of this ceremony, Mr. Arlidge opened a time capsule. A picture of him opening the capsule hangs on the wall in the foyer of the junior high school. "His contributions to our community will be forever remembered and I will remember him fondly as a kind person who reached out to me in full support of C-C schools," said Annemarie Spadafora, Churchville-Chili Superintendent of Schools.

Edgar Moore knew Mr. Arlidge through American Legion Harvey C. Noone Post 954. "Dean was a true gentleman; he always had an open ear for not only the community, but anyone he met, over any issue, at any time. He was proud of serving his country in World War II. He seldom missed a Memorial Day service at the post home, and services at the area schools and cemetery. On the hottest day, he would wear the leather jacket from his days in the service. He had a great compassion for veterans and their welfare. His passing is a tragic loss not only to his family but to his community. He will be sorely missed by all," said Moore.

Mr. Arlidge was an active member of the Bergen Methodist Church, serving as treasurer, and had been active in the Union Congregational Church in Churchville as a deacon and also serving on the finance committee.

Mr. Arlidge's wife, Carol, wants people to remember how much Mr. Arlidge cared for his family and community. "He was a conscientious man. He cared so much about his family and also for our village," she said. Mrs. Arlidge also reminisced about her husband's great sense of humor. "One time, he had a tomato growing contest with a son-in-law. Dean was going to paint his own green tomatoes with red nail polish so he could win the contest," she said.

Mr. Arlidge was diagnosed with esophageal cancer four months ago but continued his service to the community throughout his battle with his illness. "He came to the August village board meeting in a wheelchair. We all knew this might be the last time we would see him. As sick as he was, he still came, showing his dedication to the board and community. Dean was a gentleman in all respects and he was also a gentle man. He was a great steward to our community and a dear friend who will be missed," Ehrmentraut said.
