Chain saw ministry to help hurricane victims in Louisiana

Brockport pastor and church member trained for tree work

On Monday, October 3, Bruce Plummer and Dale Brownhill, both of Brockport, will be flying to Louisiana with chain saws to help clear trees and otherwise help victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Plummer is senior pastor at Christ Community Church in Brockport. His background includes forestry experience. Brownhill is a member of the church, chairman of the board of missions, and owns Arborcare tree, shrub and lawn service located in Brockport. Their trip, which ends October 8, is sponsored by Christ Community Church.

They will be working with the Pastors Resource Council based in Baton Rouge. For several years the consortium of Louisiana churches has distributed goods and resources to people in need. The group welcomed Plummer's offer of help, especially when it included the two bringing their tree cutting skills and their own chain saws.

Both men have worked on hurricane relief together in the past. Plummer has a bachelor of science degree in forestry environmental resources management from the NYS College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse. Prior to becoming associate pastor at Christ Community Church in 1986, he was an arborist for nine years. Brownhill also worked for the same company before starting his own company.

While associate pastor, Plummer also worked for Brownhill between 1995 and 2001, one day a week, to help earn the funds needed to adopt two girls from China.

In Louisiana, the two may also work off-hours with families in the church shelters. "I always hope with these kinds of trips that we not only meet their physical needs, but there will be opportunities to meet their spiritual needs also," Brownhill said.
