Raymond J. Lanzafame, MD, MBA, FACS, vice president for medical affairs at Lakeside Health System, is the elected president of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.


Lakeside Health System professional to lead surgical group

Lakeside Health System's vice president of medical affairs, Raymond J. Lanzafame, MD MBA FACS, has been elected president of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).

SLS is a non-profit, multidisciplinary educational organization established to provide an open forum for surgeons and other health professionals interested in laparoscopic, endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. The goal of SLS is to improve patient care and promote the highest standard of practice through education, training and information distribution. The organization currently has 6,000 members from a variety of disciplines and is the largest organization of its kind in the world.

Dr. Lanzafame joined the Lakeside Medical Staff in September 2004. He was formerly an associate professor of surgery at the University of Rochester until 2003 and served as the director of the Rochester General Hospital Laser Center from 1983 through 2005. He has an MBA from the William E. Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester.

He serves in editorial capacities for several professional journals and newsletters focusing on laser and laparoscopic surgery.

He is the past president of the Upstate Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the past president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and the current president of the North American Association for Light Therapy (NAALT).

His publications include over 180 scientific papers and three textbooks. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including listings in seven Who's Who publications. He has served as Young Surgeon Representative of the Upstate Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (1992) and has been awarded the Ellet H. Drake Award (1999) by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Lanzafame also received the Presidential Citation Award (2000) and Willam B. Mark Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (2001). He currently serves as the Director of Continuing Medical Education for the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.
