Senior Center Walkathon scheduled for October 22

The Senior Center Walkathon will take place on Saturday, October 22. Walkers will start from the Sweden Senior Center, 133 State Street in Brockport, at 10 a.m. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The walk will cover a one-mile route that includes Park Avenue, the canal path, and Main Street. Walkers of all ages are welcome. This is the first year for what is hoped to be an annual event.

Forms for walkers to sign up sponsors are available at the Sweden Senior Center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Checks may be made out to: Sweden Senior Association Inc."

One-hundred percent of the monies raised will be contributed to the Sweden Senior Center. In previous years, a walkathon for all senior centers in the county was sponsored by the Monroe County Office of the Aging. Due to budget and staff cuts at the county level, that walkathon is no longer held. This year, the Sweden Senior Center seniors decided to launch their own walkathon for the needed funds. "Our seniors are eager to hold their own event," said Center Director Nancy Duff. "Being localized, it is also an opportunity for Brockport area residents to support their own senior center."

Representing Walk! Bike! Brockport Action Group, Ray Duncan said, "We are very enthusiastic about this event and we support it in principle and in spirit."

The walkathon will have assistance from the Zeta Psi chapter of Delta Sigma fraternity at SUNY College at Brockport. The Sweden-Clarkson Recreation Center staff is also participating.
