Big plays cost Rangers sectional spot

Batavia capitalized on a 68-yard touchdown run and a 97-yard touchdown pass in the first half on their way to a 25-13 victory at Spencerport. The loss cost the Rangers the final sectional playoff position.

The Blue Devils scored on their first four possessions. Jermaine Henderson scored on a 29-yard run and again on a nine-yard reception. Henderson followed with his 68-yard touchdown run and Batavia quarterback Adam McMullen hooked up with Dan Kines on the long touchdown pass on the next drive to build the early 25-0 lead.

Spencerport scored late in the first half on a touchdown pass from David Stevens to John Hahn with just one minute remaining. Kyle Muir hit the extra point to make the score 25-7.

Following the kickoff and a long return, David Wilbern intercepted a pass inside the 10-yard line on the last play of the half.

On the first play of the second half, Derek Duigan recovered a fumble for the Rangers, but Batavia countered with an interception on the ensuing drive at the one-yard line.

Both teams exchanged turnovers and penalties to stymie drives before Rangers substitute quarterback Robert Tucker found Hahn for a 33-yard touchdown on the last play of the game making the final 25-13.

Ian Love led the Rangers with 134 yards rushing on 26 carries. Hahn caught six passes in all for 87 yards and the two scores. Stevens was 6 of 13 for 92 yards while Tucker was 2 of 5 for 42 yards at quarterback. David Pels led Spencerport with nine tackles. Donnell Jackson had six tackles with one quarterback sack, Wilbern six tackles with the interception and Duignan five tackles with the one fumble recovery. The Rangers dropped to 2-4 and were to host Rush-Henrietta in pool play.
