Father, daughter team publish new book

The daughter and father writing team of Brett Elizabeth Blake and Robert W. Blake have published a new book Literacy: A Primer. The book, written in an informal, straightforward style, is aimed at the general reader, who wishes to learn more about a timely topic, as well as at college students. The book contains glossaries of key terms in each chapter and selected references and resources at the end of the volume. Topics covered are: the meanings of literacy, the need for universal literacy, the invention of alphabetic literacy, how we learned to read, the unintended consequences of literacy, reading the two modes of writing - literary and expository - and literacy for diverse learners.

Brett Elizabeth Blake, a 1974 graduate of Brockport High School, is associate professor in the Department of Early Childhood, Childhood and Adolescent Education, College of Education and Senior Research Vincentian Fellow for Social Justice and Poverty, St. John's University, New York City.

Robert W. Blake is emeritus professor, Department of Education and Human Development, which he founded initially as the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, at the SUNY College at Brockport. He also created, directed and taught courses in the undergraduate and graduate certification programs in English Education and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
