Byron-Bergen students have 'senior experience'

On Thursday, October 27 at Byron-Bergen High School, nearly three dozen guest presenters offered their expertise and shared their wisdom with members of the Class of 2006 in the school's first-ever Senior Experience. The topics were geared to young adults about to leave the familiar surroundings of public schools.

Genesee County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Mullen and Genesee County District Attorney Lawrence Friedman gave the morning keynote session, Welcome to Adulthood, and Mullen stayed to offer additional advice in a workshop called Beware/Be Aware.

Allan Davis of Liberty Pumps, Jay Lazarony of Genesee County Job Development, and Evan Shallenberger of Wal-Mart advised participants of What Employers Want. Katie Brown, James Bucki, Jr., and Tanya-Layne Martin from Genesee Community College spoke about financial aid, dotcom careers and applying for college. Batavia psychologist Dr. Joseph Langen offered suggestions for social success, and a panel of Byron-Bergen High School alumni - Julia Coniglio, Faye Fuerch, Kate List, and Capri Sullivan - explained what is involved in Surviving Freedom. Pete Metzler, drummer for Vagrant's Records Down to Earth Approach, used his experiences to discuss Following Your Dream.
