Students present Hurricane Relief donation

Students, parents and faculty at Canal View Elementary School in Spencerport presented a check for $1,201 to the Ronald McDonald House to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

During a school-wide assembly, teachers Heather Shaw and Lori Faas presented a check to Judy Griffin of the Ronald McDonald House. Principal Daniel Milgate has worked with the organization and learned it was in a unique position to assist victims of the hurricane through its network of houses across the southern region of the country. "The Ronald McDonald House of Rochester has informed us of the need to assist in the renovating of the Ronald McDonald house in New Orleans that was devasted by Hurricane Katrina. We are very proud of our school community to work as a team and to be able to make such a wonderful donation to an important cause."

Through a rummage sale organized by faculty and parent volunteers in October, students were able to participate with their families by making donations for sale and/or by purchasing items at the event. Milgate says this was a great opportunity for students to become responsible citizens and join in school initiatives to improve community well being.
