Local gymnasts win at competition

Bright Raven Gymnastics Club in Gates played host to the 2005 Candy Cane Classic recently with nearly 250 gymnasts competing from 13 upstate New York programs.

At Level 10, Brittany Burr, of Greece, took first all around (34.625) and Kerry Apeland, of Chili, was second all around (32.80).

In the Level 8 Senior division for ages 15 and up, Christine Manthei, of Chili, took first all around (35.80). In the individual events Manthei was also first on the uneven parallel bars (9.15) and floor exercise (9.25) and placed third on vault (8.80) and balance beam (8.60). In the 12-14 Junior age group, Rachel Eckert, of Irondequoit, was first on the uneven bars (9.35) and third all around (34.475). In the Chili 11 and under age group, Emily Thomas was first all around (35.60) and was also first on floor (9.00), beam (9.00), bars (9.25) and placed second on vault (8.35).

Competing in the Level 7 division for ages 12-13, Amber Harewood, of Chili, took second all around (35.40) and was also second on beam (8.75), third on vault (8.80) and floor (9.00).

Bright Raven's Optional team earned second place with a team total of 108.30. The optional team score was comprised by taking the top three event scores from Levels 7, 8, 9 and 10.

In the Level 6 Junior division, 11-year-old Helen Zickl, of Batavia, took first place on bars (8.90). In the Senior division for ages 12 and over, Emily Arnold, of Gates, placed second on floor (9.05) and teammate, Kristina Nupp, of Churchville, was third on beam (9.125).

Bright Raven's Level 5 team captured the first place team trophy with a high score of 110.625 and captured the top three all around places in the Senior division for ages 12 and over. Hailey Clark, of Henrietta, was first all around (36.675) and also took first on beam (9.35), second on vault (8.675), bars (9.35) and floor (9.30). Lauren Ciranni, of Gates, took second all around (35.70) and was first on vault (9.15) and floor (9.40). Jesica Tamol, of Irondequoit, placed second on beam (9.35). Nicole Bel, of Gates, was third all around (35.625) and was first on bars (9.40). Melissa Rombola, of Spencerport, placed third on floor (9.20). Kristina Schiffhauer, of Greece, was third on bars (9.225). Holly Garbacz, of Chili, earned third place on vault (8.55). Haley Cunningham finished third on beam (9.325). Competing in the Junior division for ages 10-11, Carly King, of Churchville, was first on vault (8.55), third on floor (9.075) and second all around (35.675). Amanda Lee, of Henrietta, placed second on bars (9.275). Rachel Shire, of Chili, was third on vault (8.475). In the Child division for ages nine and under, Megan Stevens, of Brockport, was first all around (36.45) and also first on vault (8.55) and floor (9.50). Stevens placed second on beam (9.25).

The Level 4 team was also awarded a team trophy placing second totaling 111.60 points. Competing in the Senior division for ages 11 and older, Nikole VanWie, of Brockport, took first place on floor (9.325), second on bars (9.60) and third all around (36.675). Emily Hopkins of Churchville, won first place on balance beam (9.325). Sarah Daniels, of Churchville, was third in three events: vault (9.55), beam (9.00) and floor (9.075). In the Junior A Division for nine year-old gymnasts, Megan Boyce, of LeRoy, was awarded first place on vault (9.70). Gabriella Garcea, of Churchville, was third on vault (9.35). In the Junior B division for 10 years old, Ciara Reifenstein, of Chili, won first all around (36.40), first on vault (9.65), second on beam (9.00) and third on bars (9.175). Ariel Johnsen, of Greece, was third on beam (8.825). Competing in the Child division for ages eight and under, Alison Steinmetz, of Greece, finished third all around (35.35) and was also third on vault (9.325).
