Brockport's village advisory committee formed

Village of Brockport Trustee Connie Castaneda will see her plans for a Village Advisory Committee come to fruition on January 30 when the members come together for the first time. Fourteen residents have completed applications and will be at the inaugural meeting at the village hall.

Castaneda wanted to form the committee as a way to open the lines of communication between residents and village officials. She said previously that, "When I was campaigning, a lot of people that I spoke with had concerns about coming to the board meetings," she said. "They said they thought they were too formal and a bit intimidating and it was awkward for them to come and speak."

While she was hoping to garner a volunteer from every street in the village, she is happy with the initial response.

In other matters, at the December 19 board meeting, the village officials:

  • Received a resignation from the police department's part time clerk and sought a resolution to post the position. Mayor Mort Wexler and Trustees Carrie Maziarz and Mary Jo Nayman voted in favor of posting the position. Trustee David Wagenhauser was not present and Trustee Castaneda voted against the resolution;
  • Thanked George Foster for donating the Christmas tree that was set up in Sagawa Park to the village;
  • Heard from Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff that Allied Frozen Foods had approached the planning board with plans to operate an on-site power generation plant;
  • Zarnstorff told the board that Lakeside Memorial Hospital was finalizing construction plans for a 20,000 square foot renovation of its OB department;
  • Heard from Fire Chief Christian McCullough that the department had responded to 896 fire calls and 1,607 ambulance calls year to date.
