Spencerport Students Against
Drunk Driving works in community

Students Against Drunk Driving (S.A.D.D.) is a Spencerport High School club which promotes a positive, constructive drug-free environment throughout the school and in the community.

The club's advisor is Cynthia Montanez. "I like meeting new students and helping them do something positive for the school and community by making everyone aware of the danger of making destructive decisions," she said. "That's one of the main reasons the student join S.A.D.D., too."

The Spencerport S.A.D.D. chapter meets weekly and membership is open to any student. Activities include D.A.R.E. role-modeling in the elementary schools, a Valentine's Carnation Sale, "Christmas on the Canal," "Grim Reaper" Day, a Youth-to-Youth Conference, and Red Ribbon Week in October. The annual March lock-in is one of the more popular club activities, according to Montanez.

What do students tell her they wish other students understood better? "That drinking and drugs are dangerous. Every decision made in a person's day can either benefit or hurt them."
