Rangers drop first of new year

Brighton's Brett Owens scored two goals and added three assists and Colin Davis had a four-point effort as the Barons defeated Spencerport 7-4. The game was one of seven played at the Blue Cross Arena the day after New Year's as part of the Robert J. Smith Memorial High School Hockey Showcase honoring Bob Smith, a former hockey booster club president.

The Barons got on the board first 3:13 into the game with a shorthanded goal by Davis. The Rangers tied the game less than two minutes later on the power play with Nicholas Pucillo getting the goal. He took a pass from Michael Gionta and backhanded a shot just inside the far post.

Brighton came back with four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead before the Spencerport offense got untracked in the third period. Stephen Doud scored his first varsity goal after his linemates, Andrew DiAntonio and Bernard Gauthier, got the puck deep and cycled. The Rangers then pulled to within two on Luciano Petrella's 6-on-4 goal on the power play and with the goaltender pulled for the extra-attacker. Gauthier and Greg Wojcik picked up assists.

The Barons scored at the 8:32 mark in the third before Wojcik again pulled the Rangers to within two goals with the goaltender pulled with assists to Steven Vragel and Nick Pretrella. The Barons scored into the empty net in the final two minutes for the final tally of the game.

Roger Youmans made 13 saves in net but allowed five goals before being pulled in the second period for Tyler Lariviere who made six saves while allowing two Baron goals. Pucillo was named the player of the game for the Rangers.

The Rangers fell to 0-8-2 for the season with ties against Brockport in the Westside Tournament Christmas week (the team won the shootout) and a 1-1 tie with Victor in the season's fourth game.
