Brockport Hill School student wins essay contest

Brockport Hill Elementary School fifth-grader Lily Forgach was awarded a plaque for her winning essay in the 2005 Fire Prevention Essay Contest. Her essay about candle safety was among approximately 50 entries from her school. Alan Way, President of the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association and Brockport Fire Department Chief Larry Vaughan paid a surprise visit to Lily's classroom where they presented her with a plaque for "Outstanding Essay."

Lily wrote about the importance of not leaving lit candles unattended. Vaughan talked further about candle safety and told the students about a local incident where an unattended candle caused a large fire while the homeowners were sleeping.

The contest, sponsored by the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association, yielded over 2,000 entries from students in grades 5-8 throughout Monroe County. One winning entry is selected from each school.
