Willis leads nation in scoring

Burge gets first shutout

Eight area players, including Brockport High grad Craig Willis who was leading all junior college players in scoring, have helped Monroe Community College to an 11-5-1 record. Included was a 7-0 shutout over Broome CC where goaltender and Hilton grad Jake Burge registered his first collegiate shutout.

In the victory, Spencerport alum Joe Zaccaria scored the fifth goal of the game after taking a pass from Willis. Other area players on the roster are goaltender Pat Young (Brockport), defenseman Dave Weidert (Hilton), defenseman Matt Popen (Brockport), forward John Fose (Hilton) and forward Brandon Dries (Brockport).

Willis was leading all of junior college hockey with 37 points in a race with North Country's Bryan Rueckwald and Ryan Watts for the scoring title. Burge had to make just 10 saves in the shutout as the Tribunes outshot Broome CC 68-10 in the game.

MCC had seven games remaining during the regular season including a battle with first place North Country February 11 and trying to avenge their only league loss at SUNY Canton February 12. The national championships are scheduled for Erie County Community College in Buffalo the first weekend of March.
