#2 Rangers advance
Camillis Coach of the Year

The Spencerport Rangers, ranked second for the Class AA girl's basketball sectional tournament, defeated seventh ranked Irondequoit 58-42 in first round play.

Kacey Pratt and Lisa Hrvniak combined for 36 points for the Rangers, who led by 21 after three quarters. "They had a good game plan to chase us and they have more depth than we do," said first year head coach Mike DeCillis. "I told the team at halftime to be composed. Lisa (Hrvniak) had a good game and was able to take some of the pressure off on offense."

The Rangers, who won their first ten games this season and finished with a 14-4 record, are trying to win the second Monroe County Division Championship in school history. The first came during the 1996-97 season.

Pratt, heading to the University of Hartford next fall, led all scorers with 20 points including 10 from the free throw line. She also added nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Hrvniak, who scored five consecutive baskets over the second and third quarters, was five of ten from the floor with two three-pointers and 16 points. Angela Bopp scored 8 points with Ashley Green and Andrea Kazmierski each adding six points.

DeCillis was named the Class AA Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm of the Rangers after "retiring" from the Division I Canisius College program. "I was invited to the luncheon, but nobody told me about the award, so I was surprised," said DeCillis. "I voted for Jamie Fagan (Webster Thomas) since his team won just four games last year - he deserved it. I only know two words - together and team - and from day one this group has bought in to that. I've thrown a lot at them. I guess the people who voted saw Spencerport finish 8-11 two years ago, 10-10 last year and didn't expect things to be much better and we surprised them."

The Rangers were to travel to Fairport Monday night to play Greece Arcadia in the quarterfinals.
