Special Youth Turkey Hunting Day applications available

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama is accepting applications for the Youth Turkey Hunt Program. The first Sunday of the spring turkey hunting season, May 7, is set aside as a youth turkey hunting day on the refuge. Any licensed junior hunter between the ages of 12-17 years may apply.

The program is free. Space is limited to 25. Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis by mail or by phone until April 19. Those selected must attend a special orientation session on Saturday, May 6 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the refuge office, 1101 Casey Road. The program will review hunter safety, turkey calling, equipment, ethics and sportsmanship. Following the program participants will be issued a special permit to hunt on the refuge on May 7 only.

All junior hunters must be accompanied by a licensed adult on both Saturday and Sunday, although the adult may not hunt on Sunday.
