Homes sought for Fresh Air visitors
This summer, thousands of inner-city boys and girls will escape the streets of New York City to enjoy the pleasures of summertime fun in the country through Fresh Air Fund vacations. In honor of The Fresh Air Fund's 129-year-old tradition of serving children, March 20 has been declared Fresh Air Fund Day throughout the state of New York. more

Orleans County 4-H hosts public presentations day
Orleans County 4-H Public Presentation Days was held Saturday, February 4 at sites in Knowlesville, Albion and Lyndonville. Sixty-seven 4-H members, ranging in age from 8 to 18, presented on topics ranging from how to organize a service project to edible centerpieces to muscle cars. more

Riga passes citizen advisory committee law
It was a formality, and adherence to state law, that prompted the Riga Town Board to hold a public hearing to formally adopt rules and procedures governing the formation of citizen advisory committees. By unanimous vote, the board adopted a resolution at the March 14 meeting to establish citizen advisory committees. more

Riga's record keeping found not in compliance with state regs
The Town of Riga has been found to not be in compliance with New York state regulations requiring municipalities to operate under an accrual accounting system, not a cash system. more

Wind tower moratorium put in place in Riga
Two points that need to be taken into consideration when thinking about change are to know where you are now and where you will be after the change has taken place. Edgar Moore, father of Town of Riga Supervisor Pamela Moore and a former Riga supervisor himself, made the statement at the March 14 public hearing on a proposed moratorium on wind derived towers. more

Forest and woodland workshop planned
The "Caring for Your Forest Land" workshop will provide guidance and assistance to forest and woodlot owners and interested public. Topics include: how to thin woods, grow healthier trees and make a better habitat for wildlife. The event will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, at the Monroe County Cooperative Extension Office, 249 Highland Avenue, Rochester. more

Hamlin Recreation held their 4th annual Snow Day event at the Hamlin Town Hall grounds. Over 50 people attended even though there was no snow. more

Rochester picnic in Florida features hometown favorites
The 25th annual Rochester Day Picnic will be held Saturday, March 25, 2006 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wickham Park Main Pavilion, 3845 Wickham Road, Melbourne, Florida. Tickets are $7 at the door. more

On the campaign trail during February's special election, Assemblyman Stephen Hawley (R,I,C-Batavia) pledged to fight in Albany for real property tax relief. more

NYS Senate votes to preserve snowmobile trail fund
Senator George Maziarz said in a press release, that Governor Pataki's attempted raid on the state's snowmobile trail fund was rejected by the state senate in budget bills approved in that chamber recently. more

Three men vie for two spots as Holley trustees
Two incumbents and one newcomer are vying for two open trustee seats on the Holley village board. If re-elected, Ross Gaylord will be heading into his seventh year (he was on the board from 1988-1994 and finished out a term in 2005); John Heise is seeking re-election to his second term; and Mark Porter has taken up the challenge to seek a board seat for the first time. more

Village elections set for March 21
Voters will head to the polls in four villages on Tuesday, March 21. Voting in all four take place from noon until 9 p.m. more

Author visits Cosgrove Middle School
Canadian author Deborah Ellis visited the library at Spencerport's Cosgrove Middle School to speak to students and teachers about her work on March 9. In 2001, Ellis wrote "The Breadwinner," a portrait of life of women and families in modern day Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. more

Spencerport Superintendent Mary Anne Kermis joined Congressman Thomas M. Reynolds (R-Clarence) Monday, March 13, to announce the passage of the Children's Safety and Violent Crime Reduction Act of 2006 (H.R. 4472). more

C-C student organizes a fundraiser for sick classmate
Gregory Selke, a student at Churchville-Chili School District, has organized a 5K race to benefit his friend and classmate, Daniel Myslivecek, a Churchville-Chili student who is fighting a battle against melanoma. more

Featuring the music of Aaron Copeland's El Salon Mexico, Hilton High School's 37-member Winter Drumline, a synchronized percussion ensemble, beat 12 other drumlines in competition Saturday, March 4 at the Hilton High School gymnasium. more

Information sessions outline RWC's
accelerated master's in nursing administration
Roberts Wesleyan College will hold upcoming information sessions for its new master's degree program in nursing administration. This program will begin in September 2006, and allows working professionals to earn their master's in nursing administration in about 17 months while attending classes one night a week. more

offers "Parent University"

The Spencerport Central School District Family Support Center will offer a Parent University this spring and next fall. Spring sessions feature three topics relevant to students and families. The sessions provide parents with an opportunity to learn from and support each other, according to organizers. more

SUNY Brockport receives grant for energy efficient projects
Senator George D. Maziarz announced that the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Brockport received a grant for $175,500 for the installation of seven energy efficiency projects on campus. more

Byron-Bergen senior selected scholar athlete
Michael McInally, a senior at Byron-Bergen Central School and the son of Allyson McInally of Bergen, was named a News 10NBC Scholar Athlete. His selection was based on his GPA, academic and athletic awards, and success in the Byron-Bergen athletic program. more

Hilton Hockey team members recognized at award dinner
The annual Hilton High School Hockey Awards Banquet for the 2005-2006 season was held on Saturday, March 4 at Carmestro's Restaurant in Hilton. This year's team, under the direction of Head Coach John Farnham, Assistant Coaches Chris Monfiletto, Dave Messbauer and Justin Mensing finished the season with a record of 6 wins, 14 losses and 2 ties. more

Local gymnasts win
Bright Raven Gymnasts competed at the Niagara Cup in Buffalo on February 25 and 26. The Level 5 team captured first place with a score of 185.70 and the Level 4 team came in third place with a score of 181.275. more

Spencerport teams qualify for scholar awards
Three Spencerport winter varsity athletic teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award during the winter 2005-06 season. In order to qualify, a team must have a team grade point average of 90% or above. more

Youngsters invited to showcase athletic abilities
