Author visits Cosgrove Middle School

Canadian author Deborah Ellis visited the library at Spencerport's Cosgrove Middle School to speak to students and teachers about her work on March 9. In 2001, Ellis wrote "The Breadwinner," a portrait of life of women and families in modern day Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. "The Breadwinner" is now a trilogy, reprinted 30 times in 28 languages.

More than 150 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students attended this library-sponsored event. In preparation, students read at least one of Deborah Ellis' novels and completed classroom projects.

All participants were invited to an 'Afghanistan Culture Day' on Wednesday, March 8, in the library. Counselor Ilonka Tumelaire and her husband, Shelly Pitney, presented a travelogue of the region with a slide show. Students prepared and ate food, listened to music, and learned about the clothing and lifestyles of the Afghanistan region.
