Hilton students donate prom dresses

A group of Hilton High School girls display one of the many gowns donated to the Used Prom Dress Drive on Saturday, March 11. Assisting in the effort, standing, were junior Ashley Jones and senior Tasha Banks and, kneeling, senior Katie Crist. They collected 30 gowns in the first two hours of the four hour collection period. The Used Prom Dress Drive benefits the Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester Inc. According to volunteer Michelle Damico, who attended the Hilton collection drive, the program is in its third year. This is the first time the Hilton School district participated, with Molly Jardas, a teaching assistant at the high school, serving as the local coordinator. The purpose of the drive is to provide used prom dresses and accessories for a nominal fee to any girl who has a financial hardship. Dresses will be distributed at the Prom Fair 2006, which is being held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on March 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seamstresses will be on hand to alter the dresses and a personal shopper will be provided for each girl to help in picking out a dress, accessories and even shoes, where possible. Some 1,500-2,000 gowns were donated in each of the three years the program has existed in Rochester. Photograph by Walter Horylev.
