Work continues on Adams Basin bridge

Recent work on the Adams Basin bridge over the Erie Canal has included shoring up the bridge to permit work on the concrete abutments, according to foreman Anton Gricar of Hohl Industrial. As of last week, the wing walls on the north side have been replaced, and the pit abutment wall (the middle section under the bridge) will be completed by April 22. “It’s a tight schedule,” he said, with the next step being the repair of the iron work.

Crews have also moved the canal operator’s tower. The tower will be preserved for its historical significance. The rehab of the 1912-built bridge is expected to take until June 2007. This Washington Street - Route 36 bridge over the Erie Canal and the Ingersol Street bridge in the village of Albion are part of a $7.3 million New York State Department of Transportation project. Preliminary work on the structures began last November when the water was drained from the canal. Photographs by Walter Horylev.
