Holley seventh grader receives "Soaring to New Heights Award"

Holley seventh grader Jennie Hundley was the recipient of the March "Soaring to New Heights Award." She accepted her certificate at the board of education meeting on March 20.

Each month, the district recognizes a student at the elementary, middle or high school level for being a positive role model. Jennie was nominated by her FACS class teacher, Theresa Romano, for making stuffed toys for children with cancer at the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong.

"In January, I was in the hospital and saw a lot of kids who needed cheering up," said Jennie. "I thought this would be a good way to help them." She learned some sewing basics from her sister, Toni, then fine-tuned her skills in FACS class. She's become such a good sewer that she was able to help teach her classmates during a sewing and textiles unit. Once her class finished the unit, she asked Romano if she could have the extra kits to make stuffed toys for the children at Strong. So far, Jennie has created and donated more than half a dozen toys.

Jennie is the daughter of Paul and Tanya Hundley of Albion Road in Holley.
