Sweden's adopt-a-trail program kicks off

The Town of Sweden Adopt-A-Trail program will begin its sixth season with the opening of the canal on May 1. This is the longest-functioning of the programs on the waterway, with all eight of the original groups still participating. The Brockport Garden Club has offered to help the Village of Brockport's Department of Public Works with the maintenance of the newly-enlarged Harvester Park and would like assistance with its present assignment of the towpath between the Park Avenue and Main Street bridges. A new group is being recruited to work on that section.

Adopt-A-Trail groups are expected to monitor sections of the towpath at least once a month, removing litter and reporting problems to the Canal Corporation. The Garden Club planted rose bushes along its section, so they will require attention. The Village of Brockport DPW also provides help with that project.

In addition to the Garden Club, the participating groups are the Brockport Federal Credit Union, the Middle School Retirees, the First Presbyterian Church, the Brockport History Club, the Brockport High School Girls Swim Team, the Coffee Cup Campers and the Walk and Talks.

An organizational meeting will be held in the Town Hall, 18 State Street, at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 20. For information contact Volunteer Coordinator Bill Andrews, 727-1748, 637-3721 or wandrews@frontiernet.net.
