12-under edge in nationals

The Rochester Edge 12-and-Under Girl's ice hockey team, using four westside players, competed in the national championships at the Amherst Pepsi Center in Buffalo.

Slotted in the Liberty Division in the National Conference with the Colorado Select and North Buffalo Bisons, the Edge lost their opening game to eventual final four participant Honeybaked from Michigan 12-0.

In the second game the team trailed Montgomery (SE) 3-0 through the first 11 minutes of the game, but rebounded on two goals by Churchville-Chili's Ashley Ryan; the second assisted by fellow Saint Amanda Forbes.

Montgomery scored two more goals in the second period to take a 5-2 lead, but the Edge again fought back on Melissa DeBiase's goal assisted by Ryan late in the second period and Ryan's third goal of the game early in the third period. The teams exchanged goals with five minutes remaining as Ryan picked up her fifth point with an assist, but Rochester could not get the equalizer with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker over the final minute and lost 6-5.

One day later, the Edge was knocked out of final four contention with a 6-0 loss to the Lady Ducks from the Pacific Coast. Assabet Valley of Massachusetts won the title with a 2-0 win over Polar Bear of New England in the championship game.

Anna Zorn (Churchville-Chili) and Kylee Buchel (Spencerport) were the other westside players on the team.
