They want to save open space, historic tree

Residents of South Avenue in Brockport gather around a century old beech tree. They worry that if the village sells the one-acre lot on which the tree grows, it, along with the open space, will be lost. They plan to attend the April 17 village board meeting to protest the village’s proposal to sell the property located at 52 South Avenue. Residents received a letter from Brockport Mayor Mort Wexler outlining the village’s plan to declare the property surplus and sell it. Wexler wrote in the letter that the property has not been subdivided and a purchaser would have to come before the planning board prior to commencement of any development. Shown near the tree (below) are: Jon DelVecchio; Anna Rounseville; Alex Alexandro; Emma, Paig, Paig II and John Rounseville; Arthur Smith; Norman Knapp and Bob Canham. At right, Emma Rounseville, a sixth grader at Christ Community School, displays a school project she completed last year about the historic 14 foot diameter tree. Photographs by Walter Horylev.
