NYSDOT to improve access to Interstate 490 in Churchville

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Acting Regional Director Kevin O'Buckley announced that a $671,000 contract has been awarded to Keeler Construction of Albion to realign Sanford Road North in the Village of Churchville and Town of Riga. This project will improve safety on the on-ramp to Interstate 490, reduce traffic congestion in the village and improve access to the adjacent vacant properties to make the land more viable for development. Work commenced recently with short term shoulder closures on State Route 36.

The existing State Route 36 on-ramp to Intersection 490 westbound overlaps with a short section of Sanford Road North, creating an intersection of the two roadways. This project will eliminate that intersection by reconstructing and realigning Sanford Road North as a separate roadway. The State Route 36 on-ramp will operate as a one-way ramp similar to the other legs of the interchange.

This project is slated to be complete by December. The majority of the construction work will be done off the roadway with little impact to traffic with some intermittent lane closures. Sanford Road North will be closed for a maximum of a month later this season. There will be no impact for motorists accessing or exiting Interstate 490 at Exit 3 in either direction.

"We're very pleased with the cooperative efforts between the Village of Churchville and the State," Village Mayor Don Ehrmentraut said. "We're pleased that the highway will be safer for local traffic and those accessing I-490."
