Town and gown collaboration for a
healthier, more beautiful community

Groups from SUNY College at Brockport and the Brockport community will come together on two programs to make Brockport healthier - both aesthetically and physically. Brockport's first annual Walk/Bike Week will run from April 24 to 28. The program encourages campus and community members to walk or bike to their jobs for one week.

Arbor Day will be celebrated on Friday, April 28, when campus and community groups come together to plant trees on Monroe Avenue and Utica Street. These programs are collaborations among several organizations at SUNY Brockport and in the community. Both programs will conclude at a dual-event at the College Alumni House on Friday, April 28, at 11:30 a.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Faculty, staff, students and community members are encouraged to either walk or bike from home or park in one of the designated parking lots on and off campus, then walk to their office or class. By picking up a ticket on Monday, and having it punched at the designated check-in stations three of the five days, they will be entered in a raffle. The check-in stations, open daily from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., will have goodies available to walkers and bikers in recognition of their healthy and eco-friendly participation in the week. The raffle prizes include a new mountain bike, college fitness passes, gift certificates to local merchants and more. A full list of sponsors, as well as additional information on the event and a map featuring parking and check-in stations can be found at www.basc1.com/parking/news.htm. At 10 a.m. on April 28, at the SUNY Brockport sign on the corner of Utica Street and Monroe Avenue, a collaborative effort and months of planning will come to fruition. The Village of Brockport, SUNY Brockport, and 20 community, school and college groups will plant trees and beautify the Brockport community. The recently-established village tree board has coordinated the event. The Department of Public Works will provide 22 trees and the supplies needed to plant them. The trees will be 'adopted' by the groups. The group will be responsible for the planting as well as the care of the tree in its crucial first two warm weather seasons. For information e-mail Margaret Blackman from the village tree board (mblackma@brockport.edu).
