Holley fourth grader reaches out to friend in need

Holley fourth grader Shannon Kelly was the recipient of April's "Soaring to New Heights Award." She accepted her certificate at the board of education meeting on April 25. Each month, the district recognizes a student at the elementary, middle or high school level for being a positive role model. Shannon was selected by Brenda Freida, elementary school principal, for helping a friend in need.

When Shannon heard that her friend's house burned down, she immediately went to work. "He had nothing left, so I decided to put up a fundraiser to help him buy a new bed and other things," said Shannon. After talking to her mom, Mary Kelly, she decorated milk and juice jugs to collect change and placed them around her elementary school. She also created flyers to let students and staff know about the fundraiser. In about a month, Shannon had raised $230.29, which she presented to the family during a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in their honor. She also worked the dinner, serving salad to those who came.

"We teach the six traits of good character and Shannon represents all of them with her genuine, heartfelt gesture for a fellow student. We are very proud of her," said Freida.

Shannon is the daughter of Thomas and Mary Kelly of Holley.
