Summer camps offered at BOCES 2

BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center will offer three new summer camps as well as the popular Culinary Camp. The camps offered are Culinary Camp, Heavy Equipment Camp, Automotive Camp and Cartooning Camp.

Culinary Camp with Chef Bedard will offer campers a variety of hands-on culinary activities and the chance to work side-by-side with visiting chefs as well as visits to local culinary facilities. This camp is for students currently in seventh through 10th grades interested in culinary arts, hospitality, or marketing.

Heavy Equipment Camp will offer campers currently in eighth or ninth grade an opportunity to explore careers in the field of heavy equipment. Campers will learn about and have an opportunity to operate various types of equipment including backhoes, excavators, dump trunks and bulldozers. The week will conclude with campers testing their skills as they compete in a heavy equipment rodeo.

Automotive Camp will offer campers an opportunity to use AutoLAB Multimedia Computer-Aided Instruction located in the state-of-art lab at BOCES 2 to learn basic automobile repair and maintenance. Hands-on activities will help campers experience careers in automotive services industry. The camp is taught by a BOCES 2 certified Automotive Technology teacher. This camp is open to current eighth and ninth graders.

Cartooning Camp will offer campers foundation skills that could lead the way toward college and a career in cartooning animation and design. Campers do not need any formal art training to participate. The course is for beginners and also for those wanting to further develop their skills. Campers will benefit from practical exercises, expert advice, and step-by-step demonstrations. Pete Botsis, BOCES 2 Commercial Arts teacher, will take campers on a journey where they will learn how to develop original characters and storylines. Campers will create a three dimensional sculpted version of their characters as a keepsake. Cartooning Camp is for current eight and ninth graders.

Each camp is held at the BOCES 2 Career Technical Education Center at 3589 Big Ridge Road in Spencerport. The camp day runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Camps begin July 17 and run until July 28 in one-week sessions. The camps are open to students primarily in districts which participate in the Monroe County School-Business Partnership.

There are limited slots for each camp. The fee for each camp is $85. The camp application deadline is May 31. Contact Joanne Grobe at 352-2472 or jgrobe@monroe2boces.org for an application.
