Holley senior recognized for excellence

Holley senior Jennifer Ham, a student in the dental assisting program at the BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center in Spencerport, was awarded a "Make All the Difference" Scholarship for $5,000. The scholarship is funded by the Monroe 2 - Orleans Educational Foundation and is awarded to current or past graduates of non-traditional programs within BOCES 2 component districts to help them continue their education after high school.

She was also the recipient of May's "Soaring to New Heights Award." She accepted her certificate at the Holley Board of Education meeting on May 16. Each month, the district recognizes a student at the elementary, middle or high school level for being a positive role model. Ham was selected by High School Principal Terry McCarthy for her accomplishments as a student and community member. "Jen represents what we're striving for students to be both in the classroom and the community," said McCarthy.

Ham donated her first paycheck to the Liberty LIFE program of Orleans County. In addition to her class work, she is working in the field and has also participated in Skills USA community service projects. Skills USA is a national organization for high school and college students enrolled in career and technical programs. In June, she will travel to Kansas City where she will represent New York state in the national Skills USA competition.

Earlier this year, Ham was chosen as WE-MO-CO Student of the Month in the p.m. session. She was selected based on her excellent attendance, professional appearance, attitude, communication skills and academic grades. Winning this award makes her eligible for the Student of the Year Award, which is presented at the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center Awards Ceremony next month.

In the fall, she plans to attend either Tyler Community College in Texas or Monroe Community College where she will major in dental hygiene. She is the daughter of Brian and Georgie Horst of Holley.
