Monroe County Hazardous Waste Collection scheduled
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) and the Towns of Ogden, Hamlin, Parma, Clarkson, Sweden adn the Villages of Spencerport, Hilton and Brockport have joined forces to hold an appointment only Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Townof Ogden Highway Garage, 2432 South Union Street, on Saturday, June 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. more

Oak Orchard Watershed public information meeting set
The Oak Orchard Watershed Protection Alliance will host an update meeting on the actions being taken to address watershed concerns and draw more attention and funding to protect and enhance this valuable natural resource. more

Looking a bit like a piece of modern art, or a floating-in-air magic trick, the Adams Basin (Route 36) bridge over the Erie Canal was all wrapped up for work last week. more

New housing development coming to Spencerport village
A new housing development located in the Village of Spencerport will soon be under construction. Beginning the first week of June, Clairol Development LLC will begin construction of 18 single family homes in Erie View Landing off of Evergreen Street next to the canal. Prices for these single family homes begin at $220,000. Lot sizes range from one-quarter acre to one-and-three-quarter acres and include wooded areas. more

Open burning not allowed
The Monroe County Sanitary Code has a law to control open burning, consistent with the public health, welfare and comfort of the residents. more

Parma Town Clerk retires
Carol Kluth, Town of Parma Clerk, first elected in 1997, is retired officially as of June 2. Carol had worked at the Marine Midland Bank in Hilton as a teller and then an operations clerk for 14 years before being elected to her present position. more

Sweden Town Board accepts Heritage Square DEIS as complete
At its May 23 meeting, the Sweden Town Board accepted the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Heritage Square development as complete for public comment. The environmental statement will now enter a 45-day public comment period ending at 5 p.m. on July 10. more

The FUSE (Firefighters United for Safety Education) Award Grand Prize winner in Kendall was Marisa Hanlon. more

Holley School District introduces Speaker's Bureau
Holley Central School is looking for individuals who are willing to share their experiences or expertise with students and staff. Students can greatly benefit from the experiences of community members, such as a soldier who has just returned from Iraq, or served in Viet Nam, visiting a social studies classroom; professionals in the health care field visiting science classes; or a town or board of education official visiting Participation in Government classes," said Superintendent Robert D'Angelo. more

On Saturday, May 13, Holley Karate presented the 4th annual Safety & Prevention Kids Fair. This year's event far exceeded the expectations of its organizer, Sempai Larry Quaranto. more

RWC team competes nationally
Roberts Wesleyan College's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) students were named fourth overall in the SIFE USA National Championship, beating out 164 other finalist schools across the country. At the May 23 national competition in Kansas City, teams were judged on how well they taught others the principles of free enterprise through yearlong community outreach projects. more

Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year
Maxine Downey, who teaches second grade at Kendall Elementary School, was recognized by students and parents for the many extra things she does, such as her garden, an ongoing project that involves her students in growing and harvesting a variety of plants. more

Brockport Blue Devil Hockey Golf Tournament August 5
The Brockport Hockey Boosters host their 6th annual golf tournament on August 5 at the Brockport Country Club. more

Hardie no-hitter sends Hilton to semi's
Lisa Hardie registered her first career no-hitter and fifth-seeded Hilton scored single runs in the first and last innings in a 2-0 victory over Spencerport. The win sent the Cadets to the Class AA semi-final where they lost to top-seeded Greece Arcadia 4-1 in a rematch of last season's championship game. more

Hot track -- literally!
It was more than the Hilton Track and Field team’s speed and agility that made it a hot track on the school campus on Saturday, May 27. more

In karate black belt promotion tests held at the Gillam Grant Center in Byron-Bergen, several students earned black and brown belt promotions. more

Ranger coach named national honoree for sportsmanship
On June 10 in St. Louis, Spencerport Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Josh Harter will receive the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance Award (CTSA). The National Federation of State High Schools Association selected Coach Harter. more
