Adams Basin bridge work continues

Looking a bit like a piece of modern art, or a floating-in-air magic trick, the Adams Basin (Route 36) bridge over the Erie Canal was all wrapped up for work last week. Since last photographed for this “work in progress” series (end of April), work has continued on removing the deck. The steel structure was shrouded to permit blasting of the old paint which contained lead. The south wall has been cut down one meter and reinforcing rods have been installed. At right, workers are exiting the south pit where machinery and 75 tons of counterweights will go, allowing the bridge to be raised and lowered. The north pit will have the same components. Don Price said the project is “pretty much on schedule,” with anticipated opening to vehicular traffic December 15. Price notes this is an ambitious schedule and much remains to be done.
