Open burning not allowed

The Monroe County Sanitary Code has a law to control open burning, consistent with the public health, welfare and comfort of the residents.

The law states, in part that:

No person shall burn any refuse in any open fire. Fires in outdoor grills and outdoor fireplaces for the purpose of preparing food is permissible. Campfires used solely for recreational purposes that do not create a nuisance is allowed as long as all safety measures are followed. All grills and those commercially sold fire pits should not be placed near or on combustible surfaces.

If a fire marshal responds to a report of fire or smoke, the individuals name can be provided to Monroe County for a letter of warning. If you are a repeat offender and a second warning is issued by Monroe County, you will be requested to appear for an informal meeting. The next offense would require a hearing and legal counsel may be needed. Fines can be imposed. The fire marshal has the authority to issue immediate summonses for violations.

Contact the fire marshal for information by paging 529-0844 or assistant fire marshal page 463-4268.
