Area residents receive Norman Howard School awards

The Norman Howard School (NHS), an independent day school for students with learning disabilities in grades 5 through 12, has awarded Evan Maher, a NHS eleventh-grader from Bergen, with the Richard Lilly Memorial Award.

The award was presented for Maher's natural leadership, and because his humor and humanity has inspired a sense of community and fellowship both in and out of school, according to school officials.

The award was established in memory of Richard Lilly who lived with moderately severe dyslexia, yet managed to display his natural leadership qualities with a delightful sense of humor and a deep concern for people.

Michael Quataert, an 11th grader at the Norman Howard School, was awarded the Joseph Scaletta Memorial Award and Kayla McCrossen, a twelfth-grader at NHS, with the Helen Cooper Memorial Award. They are Spencerport residents.

Quataert was awarded the Joseph Scaletta Memorial Award for his interest in the technical field. He enjoys the challenge of math and the interest of science, according to school officials. McCrossen received the Helen Cooper Memorial Award because of her continuous effort to achieve, her consistent positive attitude, and her dedication to the community.
