Alexandra Liccione, daughter of Tony and Patty Liccione of Hamlin, has been named to the spring 2006 dean's list at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. A Presidential and Service Scholar at St. John Fisher College, she is a 2005 graduate of Brockport High School.


Kelly E. Cholewa, daughter of Bertram and Nancy Cholewa of Spencerport, has been named to the Ohio Northern University dean's list for the spring quarter 2005-06. She is a senior majoring in civil engineering. The dean's list includes students who attain a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 grading system.


Grove City College announces dean's list students for spring 2006:

Allison Olney, majoring in business management, a 2003 graduate of Spencerport High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and Nancy Olney of Spencerport.

Dan Spaulding, majoring in mechanical engineering, a 2005 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Kevin (Deborah) Spaulding of Spencerport.


Jennifer L. Buttery, the daughter of Janet and Jess Buttery of Brockport, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College in Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 21.

Buttery is a graduate of Brockport High School.


Mark Rick of Brockport was named to the dean's list for the 2006 spring semester at the University of Mobile in Alabama.

In order to make the dean's list, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 semester hours.


Kevin J. White, of Laurelcrest Drive, Spencerport, has graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree, with honors.

White studied in RIT's school of marketing in the College of Business. He is the son of Candice and James White of Spencerport, and a 1999 graduate of Spencerport High School.


Phuong La, a resident of Hilton, received a bachelor of science degree in visual arts from the State of New York at New Paltz at the college's commencement ceremony on May 21, on the college campus.


Christine Walker, of Sweden Hill Road, Brockport, has achieved the dean's list at SUNY College at Brockport for spring 2006. She is a 2004 graduate of Brockport High School and the daughter of William and Eleanor Walker.

Walker has also received the following recognitions: Dr. Frances Moroney Whited Award, The Newman Scholarship, Marie Dollard McGrath Elementary Education Scholarship, Dean's Scholars in Residence Scholarship, Wegman's Scholarship.


The Victors Gymnastics Team of Greece competed in the 2006 Level 5 New York State Championship, June 3-5 in Westchester, NY.

In the 12 year old age division, the Level 5 team was led by Brittany Curreri of Greece who was crowned state champion on vault, uneven bars and the all-around. She also placed second on balance beam and floor exercise. Mariah Burkhard of Churchville was crowned state champion on floor exercise and placed second on vault and all-around, and third on balance beam.


John R. Ryan, Chancellor of the State University of New York, honored 231 college faculty and staff from 62 SUNY campuses - including seven from SUNY College at Brockport - with the 2006 Chancellor's Award for Excellence, April 21.

The Chancellor's Awards for Excellence are system-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence.

SUNY College at Brockport's Chancellor's Award-winners include those listed.

Excellence in Teaching - Gary Briggs, associate professor, business administration and economics. Briggs, a resident of Pittsford, earned an MBA from Indiana University; Margaret Logan, assistant professor, chemistry. A resident of Irondequoit, Logan earned an artium baccalaureus from Brown University and PhD from the University of Rochester; Anne Panning, associate professor, English. A resident of Brockport, Panning earned her MFA from Bowling Green State University and PhD from University of Hawaii; Susan Petersen, associate professor, physical education and sport. A Clarkson resident, Petersen earned her doctorate in education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Excellence in Professional Service - Elizabeth Caruso, director, Student Health and Counseling Services. A Brockport resident, Caruso holds a bachelor of science from Niagara University and an MSN from the University of Rochester.

Excellence in Faculty Service - Gary Metz, associate professor, health science. A Brockport resident, Metz earned a master's in public administration from SUNY College at Brockport;

Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activity - John Spitzer, professor, business administration and economics. A Rochester resident, Spitzer earned his doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary members of their college communities. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor's Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the Chancellor's Awards for Excellence.


The following SUNY College at Brockport faculty members were among those awarded grants during the spring 2006 semester.

Osman Yaar, professor and chair of the SUNY Brockport Department of Computational Science, received an $894,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to operate the SCOLLARCITY Math Science Partnership program designed to incorporate new technologies and methods to improve the teaching of math and science in Rochester-area middle and high schools.

Victor J. Rojas, associate professor of Spanish in the SUNY Brockport Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, received a $240,000 grant from the U.S. Education Department. Over the next five years, the grant will fund scholarships for 40 students enrolled in bilingual bachelor's and master's degree programs, provide professional development workshops and add an additional 80 bilingual teachers to the area workforce.

Diane Dwyer, associate professor and chair of the SUNY Brockport Department of Social Work, and Debra Fromm-Faria, visiting assistant professor of social work, received a $99,236 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support two years of the "Community Partners in Child Welfare Education" master's in social work training program.

Joseph Makarewicz, distinguished professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Biology, received a $196,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for "Experimental Manipulation of Entire Watersheds through Best Management Practices, 2006-2009."


Kelly Drake of Hilton has achieved dean's list with honors with a 3.76 GPA at SUNY College at Brockport for spring 2006. She is a graduate of Hilton High School and is the daughter of Lester and Debbie Drake.


Wells College's 138th Commencement exercises took place on Saturday, May 27 at the Aurora Inn in Aurora, New York. The college conferred degrees on 80 members of the Class of 2006. The graduates and their guests heard remarks by New York State Health Commissioner and former Surgeon General of the United States Dr. Antonia Coello Novello.

Melayne Karnitz of Brockport, the daughter of Michael and Deborah Harnitz, graduated cum laude with distinction in history and a minor in political science from Wells College on May 27.


Jenna Dandrea of Spencerport, a student at SUNY Potsdam was inducted into its chapter of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. She is the daughter of Daniel and Wendy Dandrea of Spencerport.


Melissa Cleveland of Brockport received an associate degree in Culinary Arts, from the College of Culinary Arts at the Providence Campus of Johnson & Wales University ceremony.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Joseph L. Castrechino has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Patricia Castrechino of Rochester. Castrechino is a 2004 graduate of Gates Chili High School.
