BCSD eligible for prekindergarten grant

The Brockport Central School District became eligible for a Universal Prekindergarten (UPK) grant. If the district receives the grant, the program will start in September and service 33 children who will be selected through a lottery-type process.

UPK is a developmentally appropriate, learner-centered program for Brockport Central School District children who will be four years old by December 1 and who will be attending kindergarten in September 2007. The program, with a strong focus on early literacy, will serve children through formal collaborations between BCSD and community early childhood education agencies.

There will be a public hearing on the proposed UPK program on Monday, June 19 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Brockport School's Board of Education Room in the District Office Building, 100 Central School Drive.

BCSD needs to submit a formal application to the New York State Education Department by June 30. If the state approves the UPK program, Brockport will offer two and one-half hour morning and afternoon sessions, Monday through Friday beginning in September. Information can be found on the district's website at http://brockport.k12.ny.us/upk.
