Brockport students
walk for diabetes

Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School seventh graders Kaytlyn Fauci and Abbi Rice are bringing students to their feet for a "Diabetes Walk." It started out with Fauci wanting to give back to the community. After recruiting her friend, the two decided to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association. "Diabetes is a very common disease," Fauci said. "A lot of people in my family and friends of Abbi's are diagnosed with diabetes."

After months of planning school-wide fundraising activities, the duo hit the ground running, with a goal of raising $3,000. Teacher Barb Harrington is overseeing the fundraising activities the students organized including "Hat Day," allowing students to wear a hat in school for a $1 donation; a teacher breakfast, where teachers can donate $3 to have breakfast. Students can also put their names on a paper shoe, to be hung in the hallways, for a $1 donation. Contests are being held throughout the school to see which grade level will raise the most money. Area merchants donated more than 50 prizes that will be given away in drawings to students in the grade level raising the most money.

The culminating walk to help raise awareness of juvenile diabetes is planned for the entire school on June 20 with a check presentation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association at the closing ceremonies.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association Fund may donate at the A.D. Oliver Middle School Main Office, 40 Allen Street, checks payable to OMS Extra Class, by June 16.
