Students share safety information with senior citizens

Students in Will Fitzpatrick and Alana Stefanski's classes at Byron-Bergen High School have been working together to identify types of emergency situations at the personal, family and community levels in an instructional unit called "The Science of Safety." In addition to academic subject matter, character traits of responsibility and civic virtue were emphasized throughout the unit.

Students assembled a personal emergency kit to be raffled off at the district's annual Senior Citizens' Day. They also secured door prizes of smoke detectors and first aid kits. The giveaways followed a multi-media presentation to the guests about what students had learned about emergency preparedness.
