Spencerport to discuss
future of waste water treatment plant

The Village of Spencerport will be decommissioning its waste water treatment plant and will be seeking public participation and comments on the proposal.

"We are going to have an information update, let the community know what we are planning to do with the waste water treatment plant and what it entails when we turn it over to Monroe County Pure Waters," Mayor Ted Walker said.

Engineering plans are underway between the village, engineers and Pure Waters to undertake preliminary designs. "It's a collaborative effort to make sure we all understand the process, determine the pipe sizes, how many pipes we will need and who will run what once the change is made," he said.

The village is looking to turn the treatment plant over to Pure Waters because its facility is 25 years old and in need of major alterations and upgrades. "It's more economically feasible for us to turn the treatment of our waste over to Pure Waters," Walker said.

Construction is planned for 2007 and 2008. "The cost to the village is about $9 million and we are looking into financing now in the form of low interest loans and grants to offset the cost," Walker said. "With the debt service for the project, the cost to the residents will probably be about $200 to $300 per unit."

The public meeting is scheduled for June 21 at the Spencerport Fire Department, on Lyell Avenue in the village. A presentation will: review the project; review current conditions; review the future options under consideration; and illustrate the cost impact to the village.

"We're hoping the public comes out and let's us know their thoughts," Walker said.
