Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and Monroe County Legislature President Wayne Zyra honored the recipients of the 2005 Young Citizen of the Year and Willie Lightfoot Youth Advocate of the Year Awards, at a ceremony June 8 at the County Office Building. Area recipients of the 2006 Youth Awards are as follows:

Age 16-21: Donald Polaski, a student at Churchville-Chili High School; Melanie Schwab, a student at Brockport High School; Dale Barton, a resident of Hilton.


Kristen Pollock of North Chili recorded the Ruth T. McGrorey Award for Excellence in Nursing recognizing a baccalaureate student who has demonstrated outstanding knowledge of nursing theory and excellence in nursing practice. This award is named in honor of Ruth T. McGrorey, dean of the School of Nursing from 1966-73. Pollock is a student at University at Buffalo's Nursing School.


Mark Garofalo, Rochester, has achieved the dean's list with honors with a GPA of 3.70-3.99 at SUNY College at Brockport for spring 2006. He is a 2004 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School and is the son of Lori Garofalo.


Matthew Joseph Dudek, son of Gary and Mary Ann Dudek of Brockport, and a graduate of Brockport High School, received a BA in French and history, summa cum laude; is a member of Phi Beta Kappa; received The Caroline Kennedy French Literature Prize and The Morris W. Prince History Prize for Distinguished Work in History; was named to the 2005-06 dean's list. He graduated from Dickinson College, Pennsylvania on May 21.


Gerald W. Rogers, of Hamlin, received a BSCE degree during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont. Rogers was a civil engineering major in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.


Valerie Dimino, Hilton, has achieved a 4.0 GPA, placing her on the president's list at SUNY College at Brockport for spring of 2006. She is a 2004 graduate of Hilton High School and daughter of Frank and Linda Dimino.


Kevin Roy of Hilton was named to the dean's list at Monroe Community College, Damon City Campus, having earned a GPA of 3.925. He is the son of Tracy Roy of Hilton and Kevin Roy of Greece and is a 2004 graduate of Hilton High School. He is majoring in criminal justice.


Nixon Peabody LLP, has named Scott M. Turner managing partner of its Rochester office. Turner, one of the founders of Nixon Peabody's 30-year old environmental practice, is an environmental lawyer who joined Nixon Peabody's legacy firm Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle in 1973.

Active in the Rochester community since moving here in 1973, Turner currently is chair of the SUNY Brockport College Council, a trustee of the Rochester Historical Society, and a member of the Board of Directors of Unity Health System and of Park Ridge Hospital and chair of the system's Behavioral Health Committee. His previous activities include the Monroe County Community Services Board, the Center for Environmental Information Board, Ogden Republican Town Leader, and the Susan B. Anthony House and Salvation Army Capital Campaigns.


Bowling Green State University named the following undergraduate students from this area to the dean's list for spring semester: Jennifer L. Trenton of Brockport; Jessica L. Spies of Hamlin and Jennifer L. Trenton of Hilton.

To receive recognition, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduates also must carry no fewer than 12 letter-grade credit hours per semester.


Audrey Erbland, daughter of Bernie and Laurie Erbland of Hamlin, received a master's degree in school psychology from Roberts Wesleyan College.


Leighann Dudash of Hilton has achieved the dean's list with honors with a GPA of 3.70-3.99, at SUNY College at Brockport for spring 2006. She is a 2005 graduate of Hilton High School and is the daughter of Carolyn and Jim Monsees.


Brandon Ray Freeman of Spencerport has achieved the dean's list with honors with a GPA of 3.70-3.99, at SUNY College at Brockport for spring 2006. He is a 2000 graduate of Spencerport High School and is the son of Dennis and Cheryl Freeman.


Sara H. Williams of Rochester has achieved the dean's list with a GPA of 3.40-3.69 at SUNY College at Brockport for spring of 2006. She is a 2005 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School and daughter of Larry and Linda Williams.


Students were named to the Niagara University academic dean's list for the spring 2006 semester. To qualify, students must attain a 3.25 academic grade-point average for the semester. From this area are:

Lisa Robinson of Churchville has achieved dean's list with honors with a GPA of 3.70 - 3.99 at SUNY College at Brockport for spring of 2006. She is a 1996 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School. She is the daughter of Bob and Barb Robinson of Churchville.


Heather Bubel of Brockport has achieved the dean's list with a GPA of 3.40-3.69 at SUNY College at Brockport for spring of 2006. She is a 2000 graduate of Aquinas Institute. She is the daughter of Darrin and Karen Custer.


The United States Achievement Academy announced that Khristina O'Connor of Brockport, has been named a Collegiate All-American Scholar. The Collegiate All-American Scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school official or other qualified sponsor are accepted. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. The Academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all college students.

O'Connor, who attends SUNY Brockport, was nominated for this national award by Adam Standish. She will appear in the Collegiate All-American Yearbook.

She is the daughter of John and Cynthia O'Connor from Brockport.


Kelly Rivers of Spencerport was named to the dean's list at SUNY Cortland. She is a 2005 graduate of Spencerport High School. Her parents are Gary and Lynn Rivers.


Katrina Rivers of Spencerport, a 2003 graduate of Spencerport High School, was named to the dean's list at SUNY Fredonia. She is the daughter of Gary and Lynn Rivers.


Several area residents have been named to honor rolls for the spring semester at SUNY Oswego. On the Oswego president's list are:

From Churchville, Curtis Allen, a senior accounting major;

From Hamlin, Elizabeth A. Daniels, a senior zoology major and

From Spencerport, Sara A. Catlin a junior linguistics major.

On the dean's list are:

From Churchville, Daniel P. Ivancic, a sophomore psychology major, and Heather N. Lucarelli, a sophomore marketing major.

From Hamlin, Ashley M. Rath, a senior studio art major.

From Hilton, Matthew R. Donlon, a senior secondary education major; Jessica L. Maier, a senior English writing arts major; and Ellen S. Wilcox, a sophomore mathematics major.

From North Chili, Robert M. Johnson, a junior accounting major.

From Spencerport, Jennifer A. Arva, a junior psychology major; Laura C. Bianchi a junior geology major; and Sarah M. Shell, a junior elementary education major.

The president's and dean's lists represent the academic top 20 percent of the Oswego student body. Students who achieve grade averages of 3.80 and above on the 4.0 scale are named to the president's list, the top 7 percent of Oswego students. To be included on the dean's list, students must have a semester grade average of 3.30 to 3.79.


Brian J. Allis, Hilton, has achieved the dean's list with a GPA of 3.40-3.69 at SUNY College at Brockport for spring 2006. He is a 2005 graduate of Hilton High School and is the son of Dennis and Elaine Allis.


Local students graduated from Clarkson University. They are: Joseph J. Jacobs of Spencerport; Michael C. O'Laughlin of Brockport; Daniel M. Schreiner and James R. Schreiner, both of Spencerport; Matthew C. Stafford of Rochester; Eric M. Valentine and Kyle F. Zess, both of Churchville.


Lynn Farnung of Spencerport is the recipient of an Academic Achievement award from the New York Health Information Management Association at its 71st Annual Conference in Uniondale, June 4-7. The award honors academic excellence, initiative, and professional potential. A June graduate of Monroe Community College in Rochester, Farnung holds an associate in applied science degree in health information technology.


Local students named to Clarkson University presidential scholar or dean's lists are: Bradley F. Povelaites, dean's list from Rochester; Eric M. Valentine, dean's list from Churchville; and Jessica L. Terrell, presidential scholar from Spencerport.


United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal David Graham, son of Christopher and Cindy Graham of Brockport, and a 2003 graduate of Brockport High School, has deployed to the Middle East with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. His unit, 1st Battalion 8th Marine Regiment, is the Battalion Landing Team for the 24th MEU and is aboard the USS Whidbey Island, part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group. This force, made up of over 2,200 Marines and sailors, is now sailing east to perform its role as one of the nation's rapid-response forces during its seven-month combat deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East.

As part of this deployment, the 24th MEU is scheduled to conduct military exercises with the forces of several nations. This unit recently concluded a six-month series of readiness exercises and training, earning the SOC (Special Operations Capable) designation. Equipped to deal with a multitude of front-line contingencies, the 24th MEU has regularly demonstrated its skill in handling multiple missions simultaneously across an expansive area of operations.

LCpl Graham is the Radio Operator for his 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion 8th Marine Regiment based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. This is his second combat tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the decisive Battle of Fallujah in November 2004.


Army ROTC Cadet Andrew M. Kirchhoff has received the George C. Marshall Award during an awards ceremony at the Marshall Center in Lexington, Virginia. The award is named in the honor and legacy of General of the Army George C. Marshall, who served in World War II as the Army Chief of Staff and in the post-war era served as secretary of state and secretary of defense.

The award is presented annually to the most outstanding senior Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) cadets in military science studies and leadership values in each battalion at host universities or colleges.

The cadet is a student at the State University of New York at Brockport. Kirchhoff is the son of Keith Kirchhoff of Brockport and a 2001 graduate of Brockport High School.
