A new view

Individuals working to save the historic Stagecoach Inn structure at the corner of Route 259 and Buffalo Road in North Chili have a vision for the properties on the northeast corner of the intersection. A Walgreens store has been proposed for the location with demolition of the Inn as part of the project. Carol Thoms of the Friends of the Stagecoach Inn group wrote in a press release: "Envision a street front of Federal rowhouse-designed stores creating a village community of that period. These buildings placed front and center to the sidewalk would provide a place for the community to stroll, enjoy the unique atmosphere and shop (see sketch above). Studies have shown that this type of development has more impact on shoppers than traditional stores. This would create instant revitalization to North Chili and cause those passing through the community to be more likely to stop. At the last Chili Town Board meeting, a North Chili resident was complaining about the look of North Chili. What a wonderful improvement this would be." Further, Chili needs to embrace this idea and encourage both the town officials, Walgreens and Maude Development that this is a unique opportunity, group members maintain. They suggest that residents call or email town elected officials in support of the recommendation. Shown in the sketch: - Left, is the Stagecoach Inn. Center, a Walgreen site. Right, a new commercial building. Submitted material.
