Third grader gets special ride to school

Emily Bassi let the school bus pass her by one morning in early June. Instead of her usual ride, she waited for a Brockport Fire Truck to pick her up. As the grand prize winner in the Firefighters United for Safety Education (FUSE) coloring contest, Emily won the ride to school and lots of attention from her classmates upon her arrival at the Barclay School. FUSE, a group of firefighters from Brockport, Hamlin, Walker, Morton, Kendall and the Ridge Road Fire District, sponsored the contest to raise awareness of fire safety. Senior citizens at the Sweden Senior Center acted as judges for FUSE and chose Emily's work from over 275 entries. Shown above on the day of the ride (l to r) Brockport Assistant Chief Scott Smith, Emily with her parents, and Brockport Fire Chief Larry Vaughan. Submitted photo.
